Flow-volume indices in snorers with and without-OSAS.

چکیده

In a paper on obstructive sleep apnoea recently published in the Journal, BOGAARD et al. [1] found correlations between maximal sleep O2 desaturation on the one hand and peak inspiratory flow and forced inspiratory volume % predicted on the other. In their figures 2 and 3, they illustrated this by means of linear regression lines. However, for several reasons the regressions are not linear. One reason is that flowvolume indices above a certain value will not influence the arterial oxygen tension. The other reason is the curvilinear relationship between oxygen tension and oxygen saturation. Therefore, I believe that it is misleading to draw these straight regression lines, even though it is convenient (too convenient) to have the computer perform this manoeuvre.

Cerebral Blood Flow Response to Hypercapnia in Children with Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome.

STUDY OBJECTIVES Children with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) often experience periods of hypercapnia during sleep, a potent stimulator of cerebral blood flow (CBF). Considering this hypercapnia exposure during sleep, it is possible that children with OSAS have abnormal CBF responses to hypercapnia even during wakefulness. Therefore, we hypothesized that children with OSAS have blunted...

Indices from flow-volume curves in relation to cephalometric, ENT- and sleep-O2 saturation variables in snorers with and without obstructive sleep-apnoea.

In a group of 37 heavy snorers with obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA, Group 1) and a group of 23 heavy snorers without OSA (Group 2) cephalometric indices, ENT indices related to upper airway collapsibility, and nocturnal O2 desaturation indices were related to variables from maximal expiratory and inspiratory flow-volume (MEFV and MIFV) curves. The cephalometric indices used were the length and d...

Breath-holding time in normal subjects, snorers, and sleep apnea patients.

BACKGROUND The onset of irregular inspiratory muscle activity has been observed toward the breakpoint of the breath-holding maneuver. We wondered if this was similar to the increased respiratory effort with paradoxical breathing seen during the resolution of an apnea in obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). STUDY OBJECTIVE To compare the breakpoint of breath holding in normal subjects, OSA...

Comparison between anatomy and resistance of upper airway in normal subjects, snorers and OSAS patients.

Upper airway (UA) anatomical abnormalities are frequently observed in obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). The correspondence between UA anatomical modifications and UA resistance (UAR) had not been studied. We aimed to determine if cephalometric characteristics could be related to segmental UAR. In twenty-five patients (21 males) (15 OSAS patients, 10 snorers) and 10 control subjects (8 ma...

Upper airway collapsibility in habitual snorers and sleep apneics: evaluation with drug-induced sleep endoscopy.

Increased upper airway collapsibility has been suspected of being involved in the pathogenesis of sleep-related diseases. It is assumed that patients with severe obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) show a stronger collapse of the upper airway compared with habitual snorers. It was the objective of this study to analyze the patterns of upper airway collapse in habitual snorers and patients w...
